(Family Lardizabalaceae) This climber twines itself with woody stems. It is semi-evergreen in milder climates. It has leaves with 5 leaflets, and scented flowers in purple-brown loose clusters which appear in the spring. If there are two plants and the weather is good, it produces large, fat sausage-shaped fruits with purple pods, filled inside with a row of little black seeds covered in a whitish-clear gelatinous material. It can grow to 30 ft (10m) or more.

Akebia likes full sun, well-drained soil and is moderately hardy. It will grow in an east or north facing area. Avoid disturbing it when it is established. Propagate by seed in autumn or spring, semi-ripe cuttings in summer, or layering in winter.
