Love Lies Bleeding

Amaranthus caudatus

Zones 2-5

Long, red, drooping tassel flowers make excellent old-fashioned ornamentals in the garden. Can be dried (don't hang them upside down!) and used as wreaths or swags. Begins to form tassels in 10 weeks. These tassels are composed of tiny blood-red flowers which can be 2 feet long, on stems 4 feet tall. They make great container plants on a sunny patio.

Direct seed in mid-May to mid-June or start earlier and transplant out after mid-May in full sun, being careful not to disturb the roots. Seeds need light to germinate, so cover lightly. Germinates at 21-26C (70-80F) in 10 days. Space 60cm (2ft) apart. Approx. 1600 seeds/g.

'Amaranthus' comes from the Greek meaning not to wither, referring to the everlasting quality of some species. The very poetic common name is self explanatory, and dates back a long time.
