<p>This cultivar of the familiar orange pot marigold has vivid, deep orange petals, with red on the reverse. The large bright flowers are 4in wide. This is an exciting colour combination in a 60cm (24 in.) tall variety, which radiates 'summer sun'. Dependably double-flowered and performs well as a cool-season cutting flower, with straight, sturdy stems. The leaves are long and narrow, softly hairy and aromatic. The plants bloom from late spring to snowfall.</p><p>Direct seed from April to July, as soon as the ground is workable, or start early indoors about 6 weeks before the last frost. Sow 1/4in deep. Germinates at 21C (70F) in about 10 days and blooms 2-3 months later. Grow in full sun to part shade. Make sure you pick off dead blossoms to ensure continued bloom. Space about a foot apart. Seed can also be sown in autumn for early blooms next year - provide some winter protection if it gets very cold.</p><p>This old plant was used for many medicinal purposes long before Medieval times, and it is still used by herbalists today in salves, teas, and cooking. It grows wild in rocky areas and wastelands across Southern Europe to North Africa. The name 'Calendula' is thought to come from the Italian word 'calendae' and referrs to the plants long blooming period.</p>
