(Family Iridaceae) There are 44 cormous perennials in this family. These summer bloomers are known as Angel’s Fishing Rods or Wand Flowers - known for their graceful wands of white, pink or purplish small trumpet - almost bell shaped flowers. D. pendulum grows to 3ft, with grass-like foliage. D. pulcherrimum is very similar, but more robust, and the flowers are purple to dark red. This seed is a mix of both species. Several fine named hybrids form between these species, such as 'Hevon' with claret flowers, and 'Windhover' which can grow to 6ft with pale pink blooms.

This species is hardy to USDA zone 7 and will do well in good moist garden soil with some drainage. They will thrive on the bank of a pond in full sun. Propagation is from seed or division of clumps in fall or spring.

These South African plants have been grown in the British Isles for many years.
