Eryngium alpinum

Sea Holly / Bluetop Sea Holly

Eryngium alpinum

Zones 2-5

{Family: Umbelliferae} One of the most beautiful species in this genus with green, heart-shaped spiny basal leaves but with upper stems and leaves suffused with a soft blue. The 1.5in (35mm) conical flowerheads and showy, intricately cut, feathery bracts are purplish blue. It reaches 30in (75cm) in height with a spread of 18in (45cm) and is superb in the border, where it will tolerate very light shade.

All Sea Hollies like dry sandy loam soil and full sun conditions. They are very tolerant of salt and wind, and are found in the wild growing alongside the ocean. They are hardy and easy care plants. Propagate them from seed easily, or take root cuttings in the autumn. Because they have a long taproot, division is not recommended.

This species of Eryngium is native to Europe.
