Kniphofia macowanii

Red-Hot Pokers, Torch Lily

Kniphofia macowanii

Zones 2-5

(Family Liliaceae or Aloeaceae) These perennials have tall, distinct flower spikes in a range of colours. They are very architectural, and contrast nicely with plants that have flat flower heads, such as achillea. Since they flower in late summer and autumn, they also go very nicely with shrubs noted for autumn colour either in leaves or berries.

Species should be propagated by seed or division of established clumps in the spring, but they don't like to be disturbed unless necessary. They are fully to half-hardy, need full sun and well-drained soil conditions. They like to be kept moist during the summer.
