<p>Loose-leaf variety with a bit of red to the tops of the leaves - this is more pronounced in cold, dry growing conditions. This type can be grown as 'cut and come again' or left to produce a larger head and harvested in mid to late summer. Lettuce is high in Vitamins A and C, as well as folacin, beta carotine, iron and calcium.</p><p>Lettuce is a cold weather plant and likes to be planted in a moist, well-drained soil as soon as the ground can be worked. They should have full sun in spring and partial shade during the hottest part of summer. Sow the fine seed 6 mm (1/4in) deep and 2.5cm (1 in) apart.</p>
