Lactuca sativa 'May Queen'

Zones 2-5

May Queen can be planted in a greenhouse during the early winter (October/November) and will be ready for harvest by February. The small to medium sized heads of slightly crumpled leaves are very decorative, looking like old roses, especially when the yellow-green leaves are tinged with red towards the centre. Lettuce is high in Vitamins A and C, as well as folacin, beta carotine, iron and calcium.

Lettuce is a cold weather plant and likes to be planted in a moist, well-drained soil as soon as the ground can be worked. They should have full sun in spring and partial shade during the hottest part of summer. Sow the fine seed 6 mm (1/4in) deep and 2.5cm (1 in) apart.
