<p>(Family Magnoliaceae) This deciduous tree has deep green leaves with a very distinct shape: the tip is cut-off or notched, and it has lobed sides. The flowers are also unusual, shaped liked tulips and greenish-white in colour, with orange markings. They appear in mid summer (but not on immature trees), and the leaves turn yellow in the autumn. The tree is quite vigorous, and can grow 80-90ft tall (29m or so) and spread 40ft (13m).</p><p>The tree grows in sun or partial shade, and likes deep, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Propagate by seed in autumn.</p>
