Small, luminescent, midnight blue flowers cover striking bronze foliage. Excellent for hanging baskets, flower boxes and edging borders. The plants grow to 6in high, and the flowers are about 3/4in long. Blooms last up to four months in sun or light shade, until they are cut back by frost. This plant will last a couple of seasons in a warm climate. Note that the plant contains a poisonous alkaloid called lobelic acid and should not be eaten.

Sprinkle seeds onto damp soil surface; do not cover seeds with soil as they need light to germinate. Enclose pot in plastic until they sprout. Germinates at 21C (70F) in 10 days. Keep moist. Blooms in 13 weeks. Transplant small clumps of the seedlings, 15cm (6 in) apart, height 18cm (7 in). Lobelia likes good, moist soil. Lightly cut back the plant in mid summer for a fresh set of blooms. Approx. 19,500 seeds/g.

Lobelia is named in honour of Matthias de L'Obel, English botanist to King James I.
