Lobelia tupa

Zones 2-5

An unusual Lobelia, very tropical in appearance, Lobelia tupa carries panicles of curiously lipped, scarlet-red flowers which add great interest during the dusky autumn months. Choose a site bearing in mind the plant needs winter protection. Ideal for a moist corner, perhaps against fellow marginals such as the Marsh Marigold which would provide a stunning contrast.

Hardy in the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America (USDA Zones 4-10). Height 180cm (6 feet). Sow February to March, plant out after all risk of frost is over in ordinary, well drained to moist soil, full sun to light shade. Complete growing instructions included.

As you may expect, this plant is from somewhere exotic, Chile. The Lobelia genus is extremely diverse, encompassing both annuals and tender perennials, as well as sub water species. Although classed as being part of the Lobeliaceae family, it is also sometimes classed as part of Campanulaceae. The name Lobelia honours Matthias de Lobel, a Flemish botanist who died in 1616.
