Melica is easy to grow and a superb back of border plant. Bursts of feathered, maroon spikes are produced during the summer, giving a wonderful contrast against the green grassy foliage. A tried and tested formula is to create a border of grasses, incredibly effective as there are so many interesting and varying species available with contrasts in colour, leaf shape and habit. The combinations are endless. Alternatively, mingle Melica within a herbaceous border for an equally good effect.

The fifty or so Melica species belong to the Graminae family, and originate from far and wide. This particular species is from Europe and the temperate Asiatic regions. ‘Meli’ means honey whilst ‘altissima’ refers to the height, translating as ‘tall’.

Height 2-4 feet. Hardy in the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia and North America USDA Zones 4-8.
