The most wonderful perfume comes from this rather plain little plant. It is actually grown commercially for an essential oil used in perfumery. Grows to a height of 40cm (16 in), blooms July-September. Suitable for containers. Plant in masses in full sun to get the full effect of the fragrance. Prefers well drained, fertile soil that has been limed. Flowers are in cone-shaped spikes, yellow-green to brownish-yellow.

Sow seeds early in the spring (March-early April) at a temperature of 15C (60F). Harden-off and transplant in May or after danger of frost has passed. They don't like transplanting and do much better if you can direct sow them wheret they are to grow. They grow best in a cooler climate. Space plants 10-12 inches apart.

Reseda is an ancient Latin name from 'resedo' which means to calm, as the plant was often applied to soothe external bruises.
